The Cotswold Perfumery, based in a 300-year-old Grade II listed building in the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water, has been blending perfumes for well over 40 years.

Over the years it has built up a following from thousands of perfume enthusiasts, as well as a host of celebrities, including Claudia Schiffer, Gary Barlow, Elton John and Ozzy Osbourne, not to mention Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Charles.

John Stephen, the perfumer and owner, has seen the family business grow steadily since the 1960s and The Cotswold Perfumery now manufactures fragrances for some of the most famous perfume houses in the world.
The perfumery is quite unusual in that it is only one of three manufacturers and retailers of perfume in the whole of Europe.

If you are interested in seeing how the perfumes are made, there are tours available of the factory where you can get a behind-the-scenes look at the perfumery operation and test your sense of smell to the limits.

The tours start in the perfume garden and take in the compounding room, the laboratory and the packing room. All tours last for 45 minutes and all bookings must be made in advance.

There is also a splendid perfume garden filled with plants and flowers chosen for their aroma rather than their appearance.

The Cotswold Perfumery shop stocks a range of unique Cotswolds Perfumery fragrances and customers can test the fragrances.

The has also made numerous fragrances for other companies in the niche market, sold under different names in London, the USA, the Middle East, Russia and Europe.

As interest in creative perfumery grew, The Cotswold Perfumery decided in 2003 to start teaching others how to create their own perfume and one-day perfumery courses were started.  Now held monthly, these courses allow participants the chance to see into the fascinating.

The Cotswold Perfumery has also gained the Royal seal of approval over the years. In 1992 it was proud to announce that Buckingham Palace had selected its perfume “Pallas” over all the competition and in 1999 John was commissioned by the Queen to produce two perfumes for Her Majesty as well as other fragrances for the Royal family.

Today John still passionately believes that maintaining the highest quality raw materials is the only path and goes to great lengths to ensure that all of the 600 essential oils, absolutes, gums and resins are the best available.
The product range has increased to 116 products which are now sold throughout the world.
